Computerised Research Information System Project (CRISP)

Client: Wellcome Foundation Ltd

Period: Sep 1993 - Dec 1995

Role(s): Analysis, Programming, Project Leading

Ambica provided analysis and programming and then project leading services for a £6 million project to develop a client-server system that stored research information to aid the discovery of new drugs. The system was written mainly in CA-INGRES/WINDOWS 4GL on a VAX 4500 under VAX/VMS V5.5 and later transferred to a Sun SPARCserver 1000 under Solaris 2.3 (SunOS 5.3). Ambica:

  • Had initial tasks that included: preparing and running system tests; supporting user acceptance testing.
  • Analysed and designed programs to: convert data from legacy systems; exchange data with Wellcome in the US; provide enhancements to version 1.0.
  • Following release of version 1.0, implemented an integrated change control system that exchanged problem records between the main CA-INGRES database, MS Word and MS-Excel using CA-INGRES/WINDOWS 4GL and MS VISUAL BASIC.
  • Updated the functional specification and data dictionary.
  • Analysed changes for version 1.1.
  • System tested version 1.1 of CRISP.
  • In January 1995 started project leading CRISP with special responsibility to co-ordinate activities between the implementation, support, data conversion and development teams and to maintain the project plan using MS PROJECT V4.0.
  • Supported user testing of CRISP V1.1.
  • Analysed future user requirements.
  • Fixed minor problems for V1.2.
  • Assisted with V1.2 system testing.
  • Assisted with the conversion of legacy data using SQL and CA-INGRES/WINDOWS 4GL.

Following the take-over by Glaxo:

  • Implemented enhancements to handle Glaxo data.
  • Maintained the existing application code using INGRES/Windows4GL and C.
