Science Information System (SIS)

Client: Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Period: Jan 2002 - Aug 2002

Role(s): Team Leading, Web Development

With the formation of the new Science Directorate (formerly CSG) within DEFRA, redevelopment of the IMPACT System was commenced to become a new Science Information System (SIS). SIS was to incorporate information on all ex-MAFF R&D and non-R&D and ex-DETR science projects within one database for reporting to the new Chief Scientific Advisor (CSA). The project used the DSDM (Dynamic Systems Development Method) RAD (Rapid Application Development) methodology. Ambica led a development team and improved the existing user interface for the current ex-MAFF R&D users. Development used:

  • Windows NT 4.0 Server
  • SQL Server 7.0
  • IIS (Internet Information Server) 6.0
  • Visual Studio 6.0 Enterprise Edition
  • Visual Interdev 6.0
  • HTML
  • VBScript
  • ASP (Active Server Pages)

Following additional changes were made to the SIS after going live:

  • LINK algorithm was changed to take account of resource accounting.
  • Budget baseline screen was added.
  • Contractor web description added.
